Chemistry Professor Jenny Loertscher, PhD, is 2023-24 McGoldrick Fellow

May 10, 2023

The fellowship is the most prestigious honor conferred on a faculty member.

Provost Shane P. Martin announced that Professor of Chemistry Jenny Loertscher, PhD, who is also Associate Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, is the 2023-24 recipient of the James B. McGoldrick, S.J., Fellowship.

Named for Father McGoldrick, who died in 1983 after devoting 50 years of distinguished teaching and dedicated service to SU, the fellowship is the most prestigious honor the university confers upon its faculty. McGoldrick Fellows exemplify its namesake’s commitment to Seattle University’s Jesuit educational mission.

That mission is abundantly represented in Professor Loertscher’s teaching, research and leadership. Dedicated to whole-person education that hones critical thinking, problem solving, reflection and teamwork, Dr. Loertscher is that rare academic who is recognized not only for proficiency in her academic discipline but also as a national leader in pedagogical innovation. She has received multiple National Science Foundation grant awards to study best practices in science education and through publications and workshops, generously shares with colleagues—here at SU and beyond—her evidence-based expertise in creating active, engaged learning environments for students.

A campus leader widely valued by colleagues, Dr. Loertscher serves as Faculty Associate with the Center for Jesuit Education, where she works with faculty and staff to explore and implement principles and practices drawn from the Jesuit educational tradition. As an SU ADVANCE Faculty Fellow, she is extensively involved in supporting the recruitment, retention, advancement and professional growth of a diverse faculty.

Among other awards and recognitions, Dr. Loertscher received the 2017 Provost Award for Teaching.
