SU Repeats as WAC Academic Excellence Winner

August 12, 2021

Seattle University Athletics has won the 2020-21 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Academic Excellence Award.

The Redhawks, who took home the accolades last year, shared the honor with Utah Valley for this academic calendar.

“I am so impressed by the dedication and determination demonstrated by Seattle U student athletes during a particularly challenging year,” says Seattle U Director of Athletics Shaney Fink. “This award is a reflection of the commitment to the Redhawk Experience program launched last fall. I am grateful to the faculty and staff, along with coaches and administrators, who support Redhawk student athlete excellence in the classroom, in athletics and in the community, every single day.”

The award is determined by a point system and presented to the institution that performs the best in the following areas: the average grade-point average (GPA) for each undergraduate student athlete; the average GPA of each undergraduate student body compared to the average GPA of an institution’s student athletes; and the most recent two-year average of institutional Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.

In the 2020-21 year, Seattle U tallied a 3.40 average GPA across all 20 Division I sports. It also put up a standout two-year average APR score of 989 (out of 1,000). In the spring quarter, every Redhawk program recorded at least a 3.0 GPA.
