The annual tradition is back and in person.

Seattle University’s 2021 Christmas Tree Lighting will be celebrated in person at the Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons Plaza.

The Christmas Tree Lighting will take place Thursday, Dec. 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the lower mall. Festivities will include photos with Santa and Rudy the Redhawk, as well as light refreshments and snacks. Be sure to take part in the other activities scheduled that evening, including the Advent Mass at the Chapel of St. Ignatius, which will precede the tree lighting (5:30-6:30 p.m.).

The annual Christmas Tree Lighting “is held as an opportunity for members of our Redhawk community to come together, enjoy the holiday season and rejoice,” says De’Andre Jones, assistant director of events & traditions at the Center for Student Involvement (CSI).

As one of the most heavily attended events the campus hosts each year, Jones describes it not only as an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to engage in a community building experience that occurs outside of the classroom, but it’s also an opportunity for alumni and the Seattle community at large to celebrate the joy the holiday season brings.

“It can also serve as a source of renewed strength and healing after what has been a challenging time for many because of the pandemic,” says Jones. “This has certainly been an unprecedented year, but I am thrilled to be able to maintain the integrity of this valuable campus tradition.”

Adds Jones, “We are also excited to have both President Eduardo Peñalver and our new Assistant Vice President for Alumni Engagement Ellen Whitlock Baker participate in their inaugural Christmas Tree Lighting experience.”

Health and safety measures will remain in place during the event. All participating students, faculty and staff will be asked to wear their masks and complete the SU Safe Start Health Check. Alumni and non-SU affiliated community members must complete the SU Safe Start Health Check and provide proof of vaccination upon arrival.

The Christmas Tree Lighting program is the result of strong campus partnerships within Student Development, including Athletics, Campus Ministry, Conference & Events Services, the Office of Alumni Engagement, Facilities, Marketing Communications and the SU Choir Programs.

With the remainder of fall term being completed online unless otherwise indicated by the instructor, a recording of the event will be made available to the broader SU community who are not on or near campus. Additional holiday festivities/programming will be offered and announced in the weeks to come.
