Ash Wednesday is Feb. 17 and marks the first day of Lent—a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, almsgiving and repentance for Christians before the celebration of Easter.

  • Masses at the Chapel for Ash Wednesday will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Attendance will be strictly limited to 25 persons and is restricted to only current students, staff and faculty.

  • All attendees must observe social distancing, masking and other Chapel policies. To pre-register for Masses for Ash Wednesday, please log in to ConnectSU and RSVP to the date you would like to attend. You must be logged into the ConnectSU portal to access the event RSVP system.

  • In order to allow as many students, staff and faculty as possible to participate in this important ritual marking the beginning of Lent, ashes will also be distributed outside of Mass at 1:15 p.m. outside the Chapel of St. Ignatius. While no advance registration is required for the 1:15 p.m. outdoor distribution, everyone must complete their Safe Start Health Check to be permitted on campus and must observe social distancing protocols and staff instructions.

  • In accordance with directives from the Vatican, due to COVID-19, ashes will not be imposed on the forehead this year. Instead, the minister will sprinkle ashes on the top of the head.

  • For additional offerings in the community, see the Ash Wednesday schedule at St. James Cathedral, for distribution both within and outside of Mass.
