Campus Community / People of SU / Science / Technology and HealthProfessor Mary Alberg Awarded National Science Foundation GrantNo Author ProvidedSeptember 2, 2020Image credit: Yosef KalinkoNo Caption ProvidedMary Alberg, professor of physics, was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her project “Hadron Structure and Interactions.”Mary Alberg, professor of physics, was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her project “Hadron Structure and Interactions.” Funded through the NSF Division of Physics and Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) program, the grant will support Alberg’s continued foundational work in theoretical nuclear physics and engagement of undergraduate students in her cutting-edge research. Inspired by her own undergraduate research experience, Alberg has made collaborative work with undergraduates central to her scholarly life. Her research program and mentorship of Seattle U students has been continuously supported by the National Science Foundation for more than two decades. Alberg’s scholarship has been recognized by her election to Fellowship in the American Physical Society. In 2016 she was recognized as the inaugural recipient of the Lynnwood W. Swanson Scientific Research Award, established by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust to honor “a professor whose work has gained national recognition, and demonstrated leadership in engaging undergraduate students and promoting research and their institution.” She received the Provost’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Endeavors in 2018.
