What do I need to know about the crane being installed for the CSI project?

This coming Saturday, Aug. 24, the CSI project will take a big step forward with the installation of the project tower crane. The crane will rise 230 feet above campus and its jib, or arm, will extend 246 feet. The crane counterweights weigh 120,100 pounds.

Assembling something this large will require a significant closure in central campus this weekend. Two mobile cranes will be on site to erect the tower crane; they will arrive at 5 a.m. on Saturday.

Beginning 5 a.m. on Saturday the following areas will be closed to all vehicle and foot traffic:

  • Marion Street campus entry
  • Marion parking lot
  • Lower mall (11th) from north of the seal to Bannan Engineering
  • Bannan Science Hall
  • Sullivan Hall

If the installation goes smoothly and the weather cooperates, most areas will reopen at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sullivan Hall will be closed for the entire weekend due to its proximity to the crane.
