  • Courses are carefully sequenced in order to continuously challenge students' thinking. In the freshman year, students begin a four-year series of courses that teach discernment, which is the ability to know oneself and make wise decisions. These courses help students to make choices that lead to a deeper sense of personal freedom, human authenticity, and global responsibility. The humanities and leadership courses also have a global focus, especially on the developing world. Students study other cultures, learn to operate outside of their comfort zone, and develop values and beliefs that enable them to make decisions for the betterment of all people.


    HUMT 1500 Composition: Language and Thought (5 credits)
    Study and practice in the arts of rhetoric: structuring arguments, controlling word-choice, sentences, paragraphs, and essays, to produce clear, convincing writing.

    HUMT 1510 Composition: Language and the Arts (5)
    Interdisciplinary study of artistic composition in a variety of art forms, with emphasis upon, and practice in, literary composition.

    Seminars and presentations that engage students in personal and professional formation and principles of discernment. The goal is to foster mindfulness, self-awareness, and self-knowledge among the students in both theory and practice. Students will participate in local internships.

    HUMT 1810 Socio-Cultural Transformations: Medieval; 400-1550CE (5)
    HUMT 1820 Socio-Cultural Transformations: Modern; 1550CE-Present (5)
    A three-quarter, interdisciplinary study of the evolution of major systems of meaning and value in Western civilization and the social expressions of these systems; emphasis on analysis of social and cultural phenomena and on interpretation of the personal and communal significance of cultural change in the past. The sequence of courses proceeds chronologically in order to reveal western culture's continuity and change over time.

    CISS 1200 Poverty in America (5)
    The causes and consequence of poverty in America today are explored with the resources of four disciplines; economics, psychology, sociology, and political science. Alternative theories and reform are evaluated.

    HUMT 1720 Humanistic Foundations of Leadership (3)
    Reflective and critical examination of history's great leaders and the qualities necessary for leadership from leaders whose contributions have informed today's concepts of leadership.

    HUMT 2300 Leadership in Organizations (5)
    Course provides a foundation in theories of organizational behavior and builds an understanding of organizational cultures that prepares students for an internship with a local organization.

    CISS 2500 Global Poverty (5)
    The causes, consequence, and different solutions of global poverty are explored from an interdisciplinary approach, including anthropology, sociology and political science. Alternative theories and policies are critically evaluated.

    HUMT 3010 Perspectives on the Person I (5)

    Reflective and critical examination of the structures of experience which define and shape human reality from philosophical, theological, psychological, and literary perspectives; emphasis on understanding of self and on appropriation of a religiously grounded sense of care and responsibility at both individual and social levels.

    HUMT 3730 Understanding Leadership (5)
    Experiential and critical examination of the diverse ways of leadership, particularly from positions apart from office and title. Examination of how students' career paths can embrace multiple roles as a leader. Reflective writing and practical exercises; presentations.

    HUMT 4950 International Leadership Internship (15)
    A minimum ten-week (15 credit) international internship in which students record the internship experience through journaling, field notes, photography, video, and interviews with stakeholders.

    HUMT 4390 Leadership Studies Capstone Course (5)
    This seminar is the culmination of the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities for Leadership Studies in which skills, knowledge areas, and experiences are integrated into unpacking the international leadership internship and discerning the future actions of the student. Content features: reflection, analysis, and presentation of research carried out during international leadership internships for SU community and for host communities abroad; and as part of discerning their own future directions, students choose a region of the world and develop a comprehensive plan for addressing and ameliorating a particular social/environmental/economic/political problem.
