A message from the International Student Center team:
Dear Seattle University International Student,
The following guide should help you if you need to waive the required Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Reminder that if you do not have your own insurance, the charges are automatically added to your account. Coverage for the 2020-2021 academic year begins on September 1, 2020, and continues through August 31, 2021. If you begin your studies in a term other than fall, your coverage will begin that quarter but still continue through August 31, 2021.
If you will be studying at Seattle U from OUTSIDE the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a separate waiver for removing your health insurance fees. If you will be outside the U.S. for the entire Winter 2021 quarter, please fill out THIS SURVEY so that we can have your insurance fees removed from your SU account. The deadline for this survey is January 4, 2021, and fees will not be removed until after January 5, 2021. If you have any questions, please email isc@seattleu.edu.
For students studying INSIDE THE U.S. ONLY:
To be eligible to waive out the student health plan you must have comparable coverage in the state of Washington including access to primary care, preventative care, and prescriptions. Please note the policy MUST be based in the United States to qualify and the plan should be compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and filed and approved in the U.S.
For students beginning their studies inside the U.S. in the Winter 2021 term, the waiver deadline is January 11, 2021.

The term premiums are billed to your student account by quarter with spring/summer combined into one term. If you have an approved waiver the premium will be removed from your account and not added on subsequent terms during 2020-2021 academic year. Since the insurance premium is now paid by term, the policy ends when your term ends unless enrolled in the subsequent term. See above for the dates of coverage (term dates). If you apply for post-completion OPT, you can continue to keep coverage on a term-by-term basis by enrolling through JCB's website.
For more information on fees and terms of enrollment, please visit the Student Health Center's website.
Sincerely,
Dale Watanabe
