Reserve Bank

The University adopted a new paid sick leave and paid family and medical leave program on July 1, 2018. As part of this program change, regular staff and administrator employees' accrued sick leave hours as of June 30, 2018 were transferred to a sick leave reserve bank.

The sick leave reserve bank is intended for use after the annual award has been exhausted.  Deductions from the reserve bank will also occur when someone is on an approved family/medical leave of absence.

Examples

The following examples illustrate how time sick time may be used or carried forward into a new fiscal year. Each example assumes that the staff employee is full-time on a 37.5 hours per week schedule and had a beginning sick leave reserve of 250 hours.

In the first example, the employee did not use any sick time during the 2019 fiscal year. 250 hours remains in reserve, plus 72 hours carry forward from the annual award.  Another 90 hours (12 days) are awarded on July 1, 2019:

The second example shows the employee was absent for 12 days during the year. The employee will still have 250 hours in the sick leave reserve and will be awarded 12 days (90 hours) on July 1, 2019:

The third example shows the employee was absent for 16 days during the year - 4 days more than the number of days awarded each July 1.  The sick time reserve is reduced by 4 days (30 hours).  90 hours (12 days) will be awarded on July 1, 2019:

The fourth example illustrates how sick time will be deducted when someone is on an extended family/medical leave of absence. In this example, the annual award and the 250 hours in reserve will be deducted. However, a prorated number of sick hours - up to 12 days maximum - will be restored upon return from the leave and a full 12 days will be awarded on the next July 1:
