In Center for Faculty Development, we wish to celebrate our Seattle University faculty colleagues who have been honored with accolades, both internally and externally, in the last academic year.
Professor Dean Spade, in the School of Law, is the second to be honored with the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Spade involves students in his teaching to help them draw connections between legal doctrines and the reality of the poor. He is a co-developer of The Racial Justice Leadership Institute, which has broad-reaching importance in offering education that enhances the historical purpose of Jesuit education. His teaching has been described by former students as simultaneously demanding academic rigor and offering a platform for personal growth and reflection to encourage students to pursue justice, not just a job.
Professor Bryan Adamson is a national voice in clinical legal education, he has brought his integrative and creative approach to bear as a member and former Director of the Ronald A. Peterson Law Clinic in his course and program designs, which tackle contemporary issues such as political protest and policing, mortgage foreclosure, carceral debt, and critically, provide legal representation to members of our communities who might otherwise go without assistance. His scholarship has examined civil rights through the lens of the judicial procedures, and how media institutions rationalize and reinforce racial hierarchies through narratives constructed around historically marginalized groups.
