The Redhawk women’s basketball team is slated to host their third annual Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 25 and 26) in the Connolly Center. The four-game event features Akron, Loyola Chicago and San Francisco, a trio of squads SU has never faced in program history.
Leading up to this weekend’s tournament the Redhawks have tackled an arduous and demanding early schedule, playing four games in seven days. They opened up the year in resilient fashion, outlasting UC Santa Barbara 60-55 on Nov. 11. Since then, they have dropped their past three games, despite battling to the end.
After a much needed break in play, since their 82-65 loss to San Diego on Nov. 19, the Redhawks will look to rebound from their early slide behind the veteran leadership of senior co-captains Elle Kerfoot (pictured above) and Talisa Rhea. Kerfoot, who has been an instrumental leader since her freshman campaign in 2008-09, took her game to the next level this past summer. She was selected to the Canadian World University Games roster, playing in the second largest international sport competition in the world next to the Olympics.
Rhea was a three-time All-Pac-12 performer at Oregon State, before transferring to SU in 2010-11. After redshirting last year due to NCAA transfer rules, the veteran guard has gelled into the system and provided a strong offensive output. She’s connected with sophomore post Kacie Sowell to headline Seattle U’s offensive efforts, with both boasting double figure scoring averages to lead the squad.
Kerfoot, Rhea, Sowell and the rest of the Redhawk roster will look to bounce back this weekend and pick up momentum in front of their hometown crowd. The tournament opens on Friday with Akron versus Loyola Chicago at 6 p.m., followed by the Redhawks taking on fellow Jesuit institution San Francisco at 8 p.m. The following day, there will be a consolation and championship game which is dependent on the results of day one action.
Attending the weekend action is easy! Purchase one ticket each day to see both games. Tickets will be available at the door.
