Three students in Seattle University’s diagnostic ultrasound program have received international recognition.
Tara Zwink, Mirette Aziz and Brandon Smith were recently honored for the work they submitted to the W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award competition, which is sponsored by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (SDMS). This is the 18th consecutive year that an SU ultrasound student or recent graduate has received top honors in either the original research category or the literature review category or both.
The competition includes students from ultrasound programs across the United States and in Canada, who submit scientific papers in either the original research category or the literature review category.
The three recipients from SU, all of whom will complete their Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound in September, completed their work as part of their senior synthesis experience and submitted their papers for the annual competition. The papers will be published in the SDMS’ peer reviewed Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Zwink is currently interning at the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. Her paper, titled “Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: Clinical Characteristics, Echocardiographic Findings and a Comparison to Acute Coronary Syndrome,” was awarded first place for literature review in the Sample Award Competition.
Aziz is interning at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Her paper, “Type A Aortic Dissection in Connective Tissue Disorders and the Role of Echocardiography in Determining the Need for Surgical Intervention,” was awarded second place for literature review in the Sample Award competition.
Smith is interning at the Swedish Medical Center, Broadway Campus. His paper, “Investigating the Correlation Between Fetal Heart Rate and Gender During the Second Trimester Fetal Survey Exam,” was awarded second place for original research in the Sample Award competition.
