Food Justice and Sustainability at Seattle U

  • Providing all the food for Seattle University, Bon Appetit is dedicated to exercising sustainability in the kitchen and educating students on their practices. They strive to buy at least 20% of all ingredients locally (within 150 miles), are food recovery certified (surplus food feeds people, not landfills), and do so much more
  • Bon App participates in a program called Food Lifeline which has over 50 meal programs in the area. The program turns surplus food into hot meals for people in need all throughout King County! Learn more here.
  • Fair Trade products (chocolate, bananas, tea, coffee,...) are provided at all the cafes on campus and Seattle U's Fair Trade MotMot Coffee from Nicaragua is sold around campus as well! Fair Trade ensures that products were grown, harvested, crafted, and traded in ways that improve lives and protect the environment. Learn more here.
  • Food with Spirit is a student-led club that maintains community gardens around campus! You can reserve your own plot or just stop by the food for all plots and pick some produce when it's ripe! Learn more here and navigate your way around the many SU Food gardens using the edible map.
  • Seattle University is a pesticide-free campus mintained by the fantastic Grounds crew! Learn more about their many sustainable practices here

October is Food Justice Month: what is happening on campus?

  • Environmental Lunchtime Talks, Tuesdays, October 3rd and 10th: Spend your lunch hour learning about the environment from fellow students! Please contact Lyn Gualtieri at gualtieri@seattleu.edu to sign up to present. Learn more here.

  • FOOD DAY Cooking Class: Sustainable Cooking on a Tight Budget, October 24 (SU STUDENTS ONLY): Did you know that one in four college students struggles with food insecurity? Join Bon Appétit, CEJS, HAWC, Just Serve, and Food with Spirit on Tuesday, October 24 from 7-8:30pm for our second-annual Food Day Cooking Class! Executive Chef Christine Keff will be demonstrating some of her favorite low-cost recipes and sharing her tips for cooking and eating well on the tightest of budgets. We’ll also be raffling off a budget cookbook, connecting students to food access resources and volunteer opportunities, and learning how to make the most of food that’s growing right here on campus. This class is free and a light meal will be served. Check back on the CEJS events page soon to register for this great opportunity!
