Henry Kamerling's online summer course, HIST 231: United States Survey is a terrific example of well-structured, clearly contextualized course materials and activities. For each module Henry spells out how to move through the material, what to look for and what to do when. Henry also has a great final project where he asks groups of students to create 'The Unauthorized Autobiography of US' where they have to present a biography of the US with limited events. Henry allows students to chose whatever software or medium they wish (he provides a list of suggestions) but the critical piece is that each student has to explain why the events were chosen - what were the discussions around what to put in and what to leave out? Individual students also need to write a report detailing what they personally would have included if there had been more time. Here is Henry Kamerling's assignment.
