Introducing a Sliding Scale for Place-Based Justice Network Membership

The work of the PBJN is driven by the volunteer labor of leaders in the field to guide and co-create resources on how to best apply our shared values to long-term commitments of institutions of higher education to geographically specific neighborhoods. The development of the network to date has been underwritten with the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. We are now seeking to sustain and grow the network through the introduction of a sliding scale membership model. This model expands PBJN membership to individuals. Membership fees support the administrative costs of maintaining the network.

Benefits of Membership

  • Eligible to send a representative to the annual Place-Based Justice Leaders Retreat (held each December)
  • Discount registration fees for the annual PBJN Summer Institute
  • Full access to professional development Zoom calls
  • Phone consultations with experienced place-based practitioners
  • Participation in the shared governance of the Network
  • Put the values of the Network into action
  • Contribute to the national movement of anti-oppression through place-based community engagement by putting the Network values into action.

*note all events are currently virtual due to COVID-19

Responsibilities of Membership

  • Endorse and uphold the purpose and values of the Place-Based Justice Network
  • Consider participation in one of the working groups (Steering Committee, Member Engagement, Sustainability, Next Generation Fellowship, Influence the Field)
  • Institutional representation at the Summer Institute
  • Consider participation and facilitation of future continuous learning Zoom calls
  • Consider hosting a future Leadership Retreat (December) or Summer Institute and incorporate community partner perspectives including providing compensation for their time
  • Invite colleagues at institutions who are engaged or interested in Place-based Community Engagement to consider attending Summer Institute or becoming a member institution
  • Share resources including evaluation instruments, research papers, publications and other tools for distribution among Network members

How to determine your rate

Our sliding scale is an intentional effort to distribute resources equitably between organizations we work with; as well as to support and strengthen groups doing strategic movement-building work. This scale has been adapted with permission from the Anti-Oppression Resources and Training Association (AORTA).

PBJN Membership enrollment is held annually from August 1st - September 15th of each academic year. All annual memberships expire on August 1st of each year.

PBJN Institutional Memberships Institutional Fees (Beginning August 1st 2021 through August 1st 2022) will be at three levels: Solidarity at $500, Sustain at $750, and Redistribute at $1,000. In the future, we hope to offer individual membership to the Place-Based Network.

We offer Place-Based Justice Network (PBJN) Memberships at different rates depending on your individual and institutional access to money and wealth. To figure out what membership will cost you, take this short quiz:
