We provide Bailey Gatzert students in preschool, kindergarten and first grade with a variety of books that are chosen to suit each individual student’s reading level and needs. The books and materials we provide aim to support and celebrate the diversity among families in the community. Build your at-home library and read at home!
3 Events. 3 Grades. 150 Students. Over 2200 books. 1 great program – BBRAH
Our primary literacy initiative, Bailey Bears Read at Home (BBRAH), shares the love of reading by hosting three literacy events throughout the year for all pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade students. Each student in these grades receives a literacy kit at each event that includes a combination of first dictionaries, dictionaries in the students’ home language, literacy games and flashcards, and a minimum of three reading-level books that are culturally relevant to our students.
A literacy program designed by Scholastic, Read and Rise empowers families to support their children’s literacy development through a series of workshops that highlight cultural strengths and fosters a love of reading for the whole family. The six-week program includes a youth literacy circle where young, eager readers get to read a variety of books and participate in exciting literacy activities. At the end of each session parents and young readers are able to take their books home to add to their at-home library.
Family Talk Time isSUYI’s Family Engagement’s most successful program offers free English language instruction to families in the Yesler neighborhood. We offer classes two times per week over a span of ten weeks each quarter. The goal of this program is to remove barriers for families so that they can be more involved in their young learners’ school and education.
Conversation Partner Fridays offer Gatzert parents one-on-one assistance on topics specific to them with an emphasis on job search.
