Hedgebrook opened its first session of writing residencies in 1988, offering opportunities for women writers to work and live in cottages on rural Whidbey Island. Seattle philanthropist Nancy Nordhoff established Hedgebrook with a gift of the property. The nonprofit organization hosts women writers from around the globe working in many genres, and offers ancillary programs on site and around the country.
