Gallery owner and founder Doreen Mitchum talks to a patron of Gallery Desta with a work by Abraham Gebreziabher behind them.
Located in the heart of Seattle’s Central District between S. Jackson St. and Martin Luther King Jr. Way S., Gallery Desta provided the Seattle Black community with curated exhibitions focused on the Black experience. Owned and operated by Doreen Mitchum the gallery presented both local and internationally recognized artists including Al Doggett, George Cook, and Keith Haynes during the gallery’s brief tenure from the beginning of 1980 through the end of that same year. Along with showcasing local talents, Gallery Desta also sold African and Caribbean decorative items and held artist-focused programming such as “Meet the Artist” receptions and music performances called Sunset Gatherings where internationally acclaimed Nubian musician Hamza El Din performed.
