Mariela López Velarde is an Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages & Cultures at Seattle University. She has taught introductory, intermediate, and advanced English- and Spanish-language courses in higher education for over 10 years. Mariela’s research adopts an interdisciplinary approach for the study of second language (L2) processing in the bilingual mind. She is particularly interested in second language acquisition, bilingualism, experimental phonology, L2 speech perception and production, and L2 processing. Mariela obtained her PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching from The University of Arizona in May 2020. She was born and raised in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, and she is a native speaker of the norteño dialect of Mexican Spanish.
