Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in the Certificate in Sport Sustainability Leadership at Seattle University. Our curriculum is set up to provide you with the skills to work in sport in many different capacities.

Q: Do I have to come to campus at any point?

A: No.  The program is designed so that you can stay where you are and not incur the cost of traveling to Seattle like other online programs.  All interactions are done online through Canvas, our education platform, including class assignments, discussions, conference calls, etc.

Q: What if I already have my LEED Green Associate certification?

A: Great! You are ahead of the game and can check the box on one of the requirements for completing the certificate.

Q: What exactly will I learn?

A: Great question – a lot!  While each class has its own specific focus, the curriculum consistently refers to LEED, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), ISO 12200, Council for Responsible Sport certification so that students are familiar and able to incorporate these global standards into their daily practice.  Further, students will be able to identify who the key stakeholder groups are when initiating sustainability efforts, what initiatives are best suited for their particular organization, how to communicate/market these initiatives to increase their effectiveness, and how to evaluate these programs so they can be modified to meet your organizations KPIs and ROIs metrics.

Q: What if I get too busy with work?

A: We will work with you to ensure that you can submit your work in a timely manner.  Our previous students have complemented us on the work-school balance.  The program is designed to be rigorous, but we understand that a majority of our students are working full time in the sports industry.

Q: What if I don’t have sport industry experience?

A: Do not worry!  The certificate is designed to acclimate students without sport industry experience to become familiar with the business of sport.

Q: What if I don’t have a sustainability background?

A: This is exactly why our program exists.  The courses are designed to help you integrate environmental sustainability seamlessly into your sport organization.  Ultimately, you will confidently manage the various dynamics consistent with the robust sustainability initiatives that are common in the sport industry.

Q: Do I have to take the entire MSAL graduate degree or just the Sport Sustainability Leadership Certificate?

A: No.  The Sport Sustainability Leadership Certificate is its own standalone program.  It can also be taken as part of the MSAL graduate degree, but that is not required.

Q: How much does the certificate cost?

A: The current cost is $741 per credit totaling $11,115.  There are merit and need-based scholarships available! So, apply early to be eligible.

Q: What do I need to do to apply?

A: First, you need to have completed your undergraduate degree (or equivalent), submit a letter of purpose, solicit two letters of recommendation, and request your official academic transcripts. All this can be done through our website by clicking here.
