The College of Arts and Sciences offers two types of internships: experiential internships and credential-building internships.
Within a few programs, such as Public Affairs, Journalism, Non-Profit Leadership and Criminal Justice, internships are not required for graduation but are strongly recommended by the program and the department chair. If your selected major recommends the completion of an internship, meet with your department’s designated internship coordinator early in the program to learn more about the value of participating in an internship as part of your major.
Experiential internships are generally major-related and open to any student in the College of Arts and Sciences as long as the student meets the internship and employer requirements. These internships provide work experience related to the student’s academic field. Experiential internships are not a requirement for graduation and are electives within the student’s major.
Examples of experiential internships within the College of Arts and Sciences occur in departments such as English, Fine Arts, and Environmental Studies. Credential-building internships, in contrast, are frequently required for some program majors and are open only to students with a declared major in those programs. These credential-building internships must be completed for graduation from the program as part of the student’s professional certification or credentialing process.
Examples of credential-building internships in the College of Arts and Sciences occur in departments such as Psychology and Social Work. If your selected major requires the completion of a credential-building internship, meet with your department’s designated internship coordinator as soon as possible to plan for your required internship.
