The Japanese Program provides students with a foundation to understand the Japanese language, society, and people. It consists of two years of language courses and a one quarter culture program. The program is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to meet the social and global demands of the 21st century.
The minor requires 35 credits (typically 5 language courses and two 3000 level 5-credit courses which focus on Japan) with the approval of the program. A maximum of 15 credits can be accepted from outside the institution. However, JPAN 3150 (Japanese Culture) must be taken at Seattle University.

Studying Japanese has changed my life, leading to experiences and adventures I had never dreamed of before. What started out as more of a hobby than anything turned into a growing interest and passion for Japanese language and culture.
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program is a Japanese government initiative that brings university graduates who are native speakers of English to Japan. It is very selective, and applicants with Japanese language ability are highly competitive. Many SU graduates who studied Japanese have worked in Japan through the JET Program.

At Seattle U, we take your career readiness seriously, so we’ve created an inventory and program-level map for you to help you see what skills you’re likely to practice in your major or, as in this case, as you study your first year of a language.
