Biography

Ben was raised in the Pacific Northwest, but a lifelong fascination with Japan led him to spending several years studying abroad in Japan at Sophia University (上智大学) in Tokyo and the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama. Ben completed a BA and MA in Japanese language and literature at Portland State University and continued his graduate studies at the University of Washington, where he completed an MA in Japanese Applied Linguistics. Ben taught Japanese language courses throughout his years as a graduate student and quickly learned that he has a passion for teaching Japanese. Ben's academic interests are second language acquisition, language play and development, and translation. In his free time he enjoys boxing and playing the guitar.
