Seattle Times Series Published Aug. 29-31, 2010

The three-day series produced by the Seattle Times team of Journalism Fellows, "Invisible Families:  The homeless you don't see" was published Sunday, Aug. 29 through Tuesday, Aug. 31.  This is a major package in both print and online, with photos and video, profiling homeless families and the service providers working to help them.
Seven community news partners such as the West Seattle Blog participated as well. 

The Fellows from the Seattle Times included Lornet Turnbull, reporter (above);  Nina Pardo, communities coordinator (immediately below); and Erika Schultz, photographer (far below).

Two Seattle U students served as research assistants to the Times team. Maggie Wykowski was a senior in Sociology; Laura Kesl was a grad student in Student Development Administration. Laura's story about homeless dads trying to reunite with their children after prison ran in the Rainier Valley Post.

Seattle Times Team Wins Prestigious Casey Medal

The 2011 Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism in Multimedia went to the Seattle Times online presentation of “Invisible Families.”

This is the second award for the reporting project, which grew out of the Center for Strategic Communications Project on Family Homelessness and its Journalism Fellowships.

The award recognizes distinguished news coverage of disadvantaged children, youth and families. The Seattle Times team accepted the award at a ceremony Oct. 18, 2011. The Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism are presented by the Journalism Center on Children & Families and funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Read More.
