Psychology Department Professor Kathleen Cook, along with Mechanical Engineering Professors Greg Mason, Chris Stipe, and Teodora Rutar Shuman received a National Science Foundation grant to study problem-based learning outside of the traditional classroom. The $171,000 grant funds research designed to further develop and test a new approach to engineering education.
“Present engineering education does not model how real-world engineers learn and problem-solve,” Cook said. “The goal of this new approach is to move content delivery outside of the classroom and free class time for students to work on solving real engineering problems in the way real engineers solve them.”
Cook will guide curriculum development and devise, analyze, and report on the assessments.
Cook, who received her PhD from the University of Washington, joined the Psychology faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences in 2002. Her research and scholarship focus on social cognition and social psychology.
The College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in Seattle University, offers BA and BS degrees in Psychology as well as an MA in Psychology based on the existential-phenomenological-therapeutic approach
