Professor Kevin Maifeld, MFA, was elected vice president of Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE) at the organization’s annual meeting in June. In addition to directing the MFA in Arts Leadership, Maifeld directs the BA in Interdisciplinary Arts with a Specialization in Arts Leadership.
AAAE is an international organization of colleges and universities that focuses on training in arts management and establishing standards of education for arts administration. Since its founding in 1979, AAAE has responded to the critical need for management expertise among arts administrators.
“Our MFA in Arts Leadership and our BA program recognize the value of management for practicing artists and for arts organizations,” Maifeld said. “We work with artists to prepare them for the demands of managing their own creativity and with students who want to lead arts organizations.”
Maifeld developed the MFA in Arts Leadership at Seattle University in 2007. The program is particularly designed to respond to the demand of arts organizations for leaders with the specific skills necessary to direct complex arts organizations. The curriculum focuses on effective fundraising, volunteer recruitment, marketing and communication, board development, finance, strategic planning, program development, community relations, and legal and ethical issues. Students take advantage of Seattle’s vibrant arts scene during a 9-credit internship in a variety of local arts organizations. In 2010 in recognition of its curriculum and faculty, the MFA in Arts Leadership was granted full membership in AAAE.
Maifeld received his MFA in Theatre Management/Arts Administration. In 2013, he co-founded the American Journal of Arts Management and remains a co-editor. The online journal bridges the scholarly divide between academia and professional nonprofit arts organizations.
