The College of Arts and Sciences is now accepting applications for the new graduate Certificate in Sport Sustainability Leadership. The 15-credit, online certificate addresses the growing demand for increasing environmentally and ecologically sustainable practices in the sport industry. Most students can complete the program in 9 months.
The curriculum focuses on the environmental aspects of sustainability that impact all aspects of a sport organization, including facility operations, finance, marketing, sponsorship, team operations, supply chain, and legal. Course concepts are built on theory and demonstrated through practical examples from the sport industry. Assignments are focused on developing comprehensive sustainability campaigns based on data-driven decisions.
"This is the first program of its kind in the world that meets the need for professionals who can embed environmentally sustainable practices in sport organizations," said Professor Brian McCullough, program director. "Our program meets the needs of amateur, professional, local, national, and international athletic programs seeking to be leaders in sport sustainability."
All students must complete a practicum that may be in a sport organization where they work. During the practicum, they act as outside sustainability consultants, conducting research and analysis and making specific recommendations that are then presented directly to the organization.
"We prepare our students for leadership that ensures the success of environmental sustainability efforts in the industry," McCullough added. "Their final projects can go directly from the classroom into a strategic plan."
In addition, students are required to take the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Associate certification exam. LEED, Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices.
The Certificate in Sport Sustainability Leadership is administered by the Master of Sport Administration and Leadership program and is part of the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability at Seattle University. Complete program details and application information is on the website here.
