The College of Arts and Sciences is offering degrees in Interdisciplinary Arts with a specialization in Arts Leadership, BA and minor, starting in September. The BA degree curriculum focuses on building the business acumen of young artists who plan to produce their own work or who seek work in an arts organization. The degree requires an internship in a local arts organization to let students put their learning to practice. The minor in Arts Leadership allows students with majors in the departments of Art and Art History and Performing Arts and Arts Leadership to complement their studio or performing arts training with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of working in the arts.
"The interdisciplinary degree allows for flexibility of focus," said Professor Kevin Maifeld, Program Director. "Students may balance the Arts Leadership core with additional coursework related to the arts business or they may choose courses in a particular arts discipline."
Students in the BA degree program take Arts Leadership classes that provide a foundation in communication, marketing, entrepreneurship, law, and resource development while completing courses within a specific arts discipline. Students apply their learning during an Arts Leadership Internship at one of Seattle's many outstanding music, theater, art or dance organizations.
"By the time they graduate, our students have valuable real-world experience that complements their classroom learning," Maifeld added.
