Three of our Criminal Justice faculty have new books out this fall, including

  • No Remorse: Psychopathy and Criminal Justice by Jackie Helfgott, PhD
  • Women Leading Justice: Experiences and Insights by Elaine Gunnison, PhD, and Jackie Helfgott, PhD
  • Doing Ethnography in Criminology: Discovery Through Fieldwork co-edited by Stephen Rice, PhD

Faculty authors and cover art for their booksAn earlier book by Drs. Gunnison and Helfgott, Offender Reentry Beyond Crime and Punishment, is also now available in paperback.

Dr. Helfgott’s No Remorse: Psychopathy and Criminal Justice is described as “an in-depth interdisciplinary perspective on psychopathy suitable for those interested in criminology and criminal justice, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and other social science as well as general knowledge.” I It calls for more attention in everyday life and in the criminal justice field about how popular and scientific conceptions of psychopathy make their way into criminology and criminal justice practice, including on juror decision-making and voting on criminal-justice related issues.

In Women Leading Justice: Experiences and Insights, Drs. Gunnison and Helfgott interviewed more than 30 female executive criminal justice leaders in police, courts, corrections, victim services, and academia. These leaders provide their insights on how they rose through the ranks in their careers and offer advice to those pursuing careers in criminal justice. Several inspirational local Seattle leaders were interviewed for this book. Several MACJ graduate students who are now alumni were instrumental in helping behind the scenes.

Dr. Stephen Rice co-edited Doing Ethnography in Criminology: Discovery Through Fieldwork with Michael D. Maltz, PhD.  The book takes an innovative look at the use of ethnography and fieldwork in Criminology and Criminal Justice. This book will be of great interest to students studying research methods and design.
