Alfred G. Pérez, PhD, MSW, received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, his MSW from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in social work with a minor in speech communications from San José State University. His fields of interest include child welfare practice and policy, the adult functioning of former foster youth, formal and informal helping systems among vulnerable populations, and positive youth development. His current research examines how young adults with foster care histories experience policies decisions and the extent to which these policies attain their objectives while yielding unintended consequences. His professional experiences before academia spans state government, direct child welfare practice, social welfare policy, and the federal government. Most notably, Dr. Pérez’s tenure with former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano’s administration included reform of the child protection services program, and former President Bill Clinton invited Dr. Pérez to deliver remarks at the White House bill signing ceremony of the Foster Care Independence Act.
