Biography

Kristin Doll received a BA (summa cum laude) in English and anthropology at Minnesota State University, Mankato; a Master of Liberal Studies in interdisciplinary medieval studies from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; and a Ph.D. in religious studies with a concentration in medieval Christianity from Northwestern University. Her dissertation, entitled Church Aflame: The 1112 Burning and Repair of the Cathedral of Laon, incorporated many of her primary research interests, including church fires and reconstruction, disaster theory, pilgrimage, sacred space, Marian devotion, miracles, saints’ cults, and violence and the Church.

Dr. Doll is pleased to be teaching courses in comparative religion at Seattle University because they allow her to introduce students to a variety of ways of doing, thinking, and being. Her classes use active learning methods to bring the subject matter to life, and to help learners make connections between classroom material and lived experience. Past classes have included such activities as explorations of Jewish haggadot as textual expressions of culture, virtual tours of the Islamic Blue Mosque of Istanbul, and discussions on Hindu death and dying practices inspired by the Covid pandemic.
