An Alumni Advent Mass Reception Story
Posted by Amanda Kelly on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 1:35 PM PSTIt was the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2008 when I was told that I had cancer. Not really what I wanted for Christmas! An exploratory surgery during that time confirmed that I needed more surgery and subsequent chemotherapy. Fear took on new meaning for me.
The prior Christmas I had attended the Alumni Advent Mass and Reception and had met one of our alums (Teresa Coluccio) and we had chatted briefly. When Teresa called me out of the blue in my office at SU in January of 2009 and said that she had noted that I was scheduled to see a surgeon in the Swedish system, I was surprised to say the least. It turned out she worked for the foremost surgeon in the Swedish system for my type of cancer and she said that she “would get me in”. I had had difficulty trying to get an appointment with this surgeon. She also “got me into see” the best oncologist in the system.
Teresa’s phone call to me was one of the most memorable of my life. Her desire to help, her care, concern, practical advice and amazing connections to the best medical care in Seattle did everything to ease fear which had become my middle name. I view that experience with Teresa as one of those miracles in our lives. Teresa is a ’78 graduate of SU’s College of Nursing – who really is living our mission.
