William Swenson, '01, receives Medal of Honor

Former Capt. William Swenson, a 2001 Seattle University political science graduate, received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama on Oct. 15 for his heroism in a 2009 battle with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. Swenson is the first army officer since the Vietnam War to receive the nation's highest award for valor and joins just six other living medal recipients.

"Captain Swenson represents the best of our country and the best of this university," said SU President Stephen Sundborg, S.J. "All of us at Seattle University are proud of his extraordinary heroism and grateful for the selfless example he set."
