June 2007
On Friday, June 1, Reverend Mike Raschko, associate professor in the School of Theology and Ministry, received the 2007 McGoldrick Fellowship, the most prestigious award the university presents to faculty. Named for SU’s former president—and selected by current president Stephen Sundborg, S.J.—the McGoldrick Fellowship includes a one-quarter sabbatical.
“I was a bit stunned when Fr. Sundborg told me about the award,” says Raschko.
“As I have reflected on the fact that it is an award given for commitment to students and to the values that underlie Jesuit education, it strikes me that those are hallmarks of the whole School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. I am lucky to be a part of the faculty of STM and the university where values like these are prized.”
A Roman Catholic systematic theologian, Fr. Raschko has been at SU since 1985. Raschko was named the Bertch Professor of Catholic Systematic Theology in 2005. He assists the pastor at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Issaquah and teaches throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle.
“Father Raschko represents the best of what we strive to be at Seattle University,”
says Father Sundborg. “He is as outstanding a teacher as he is a scholar. I cannot think of a more deserving McGoldrick Fellow.”

Fr. Patrick Howell, S.J. Travels to Montana to Present Diploma
Fr. Patrick Howell, S.J. had the honor of presenting the diploma for a Masters in Pastoral Studies to Sandy Flamand of the Blackfoot Tribe in Browning, Montana. They had a wonderful blessing ceremony with drumming and chanting by the elders and then a "baccalaureate blessing" for Sandy.
After these prayer services, Fr. Howell donned his academic dean's robes, gave a little talk about the passion for theology and pastoral care that Sandy exemplified and then presented her with her diploma.
For many years, Sandy has worked in partnership with the Jesuits in the Kateri Institute to form Catholic lay ministers & catechists.
Currently Sandy is undergoing chemotherapy, but she valiantly arrived in a wheel chair and was most grateful for the celebration and all that STM had done for her. {It was mutual!} Her two sisters organized a great potluck in the Blackfeet Community College and her husband and children and grandchildren, along with friends, joined in the warm celebration.
Sandy and Fr. Howell planned it to occur during Blackfeet Indian Days, an annual celebration with parades, Indian dancing, drumming & chanting.

STM students share their expirences through a blog.
The blog (or diary) site was created for 5 of our students who volunteered to write about their experiences here at STM personally and academically.
It is very exciting, as we are the first department, school, or division to take advantage of this opportunity for current students to share their thoughts and ideas with perspective students.
It is a great way to market our programs as it is un-edited and un-moderated, allowing visitors to feel a sense of authenticity in the students' words.
The direct link is below, however please pass along to anyone interested in STM that they can visit our website and follow the link on the main page to the blogs. We hope to add more students over the next few months who will dedicate the time and passion to this project.
