For the purposes of establishing an additional relationship with our community through the Youth Initiative, the Law school proposes a new initiative in which we would host a monthly family games and resource event to be held at Bailey-Gatzert Elementary School after-school or in the early evening. All families from Bailey-Gatzert Elementary School would be invited to play games (possibly including games from www.icivics.org) and learn about community resources such as legal assistance, health care support etc. This would be an opportunity to engage youth in educational activities and provide valuable information for their parents and/or extended family members. These events would also give law school community members an opportunity to decompress while doing something valuable, and most importantly, build a relationship with the Bailey-Gatzert community. This aligns with the SUYI strategic priority #2 - academic support for youth and strategic priority #3 – support for families. Current law school work study resources could be used to pay for a student leader to take the lead in organizing the initiative and would be supported by staff. Funding for expenses like food and marketing could possibly be shared among law school departments and/or external sponsorships could be sought.
