The Application Process

There is no single template for leadership; it takes many forms. Some leaders are charismatic leaders; others lead by example. Among the many leadership styles are servant leadership, participative leadership, delegative leadership, transformational leadership, and relations-oriented leadership. The Sullivan Leadership Award seeks students with diverse personal backgrounds and leadership styles.

All leaders must be able to communicate clearly and effectively. Recognizing this, the Sullivan Leadership Award Selection Committee stresses communication skills among the strengths it evaluates in candidates.

The Sullivan Leadership program seeks to prepare leaders who will work in pursuit of a just and humane world. It is critical that we educate leaders from a variety of backgrounds with whom communities will identify in order to achieve this goal. Seattle University’s student body is geographically, ethnically, culturally and economically diverse, and we seek to annually select nine entering freshmen of diverse leadership styles who as a group reflect the student body’s diversity.

Applicants for the Sullivan Leadership program must submit complete applications for Early Action freshman admission consideration by November 15:

Additionally, they must submit Sullivan Leadership Award applications by November 15:

  • Sullivan Leadership Award Application, which can be submitted here
  • A Letter of Application discussing the applicant’s interest in service, leadership, justice, community, and global awareness.
  • A  resume  of leadership and service experiences. Typically these involve experiences in student government, athletics, the arts, religious service groups, community service, and part-time employment. It is appropriate to note service and education abroad experiences here as well. Awards, special recognitions, and honor society selections should be included.
  • Two letters of recommendation that note the objectives of the Sullivan Leadership Award and address the applicant’s record of service and leadership.
  • An essay describing a vision of leadership, where the writer does not reference himself or his accomplishments but instead reflects on a leadership concept of his choice.  Please limit your comments to two typed pages, one sided, double spaced.
