1996
- Initiated and approved by Alpha Sigma Board under leadership of Jan Flom. An outreach scholarship in the name of former SU Dean of Nursing (’68-77), Eileen Ridgway. Molly Linden named Chair of Fund, Treasurer, Cathy Rundell directed to serve as ex-officio of Fund, April 1996.
- Announcement of Ridgway Outreach Scholarship at Chapter Banquet marking Chapter’s 30th Anniversary – May 16, 1996.
- Fund drive initiated with focus on current Alpha Sigma members, July 9, 1996.
1997
- 1997 First Scholarship Recipients: Bruce Leonard, graduate school. Program: development of flu vaccine manual/education for high-risk senior citizen groups. Matt Shaw, undergraduate. Program: assessment of needs (survey) of homeless youth on Broadway (Seattle). Award winners announced at Spring Chapter Banquet, May 22, 1997.
- Christmas fund drive. Solicitation to alumnus of Seattle U, School of Nursing community. $5,000.00 raised – Christmas 1997.
1998
- 1998 Second Scholarship Award Recipient: Carol Kemp, senior student. Focus and project: assessment of needs/resources for gay, lesbian, transgender youth. Announced/awarded at spring banquet, May 21, 1998.
- Second Christmas fund drive. Targeted SU alumnus, community. $4,000.00 raised – Christmas, 1998.
1999
- 1999 Third Scholarship Award Recipient: Jacqueline O’Reilly. Focus: high-risk teens at White Center. Project: development and presentation of workshops with emphasis on self-esteem/sexual behavior and outcomes. Announced/awarded at Chapter Spring Banquet, May 1999.
- Ridgway Outreach Scholarship awarded Innovative Chapter Award for Region I. Presented in Los Angeles, February 1999.
- Third Christmas fund drive. $3,000.00 raised, Christmas 1999.
2000
- 2000 Fourth Scholarship Award Recipient: Joanne Cam. Focus: 3rd graders in low-income, ethnically diverse schools. Project: provision of hygiene / nutritional information and assistance with health care access.
- Fourth fund drive, Fall 2000. Mass mailing of 620 solicitation letters to chapter members and SU nursing alumnus from 1960-1976. $3,000.00 raised.
2001
- 2001 Fifth Scholarship Award Co-Recipients: Senior nursing student, Jonelle Matsushima, proposed/initiated a program for foot care to prevent foot care complications in area shelters. Fellow senior, Jennifer Cicero, developed a proposal to link the National Student Nurses Association with Seattle U neighborhood communities. Program mission to engage students with local high-risk communities by incorporating linkage between needs assessment / teaching.
- Fifth fund drive, Christmas 2001. Target active Alpha Sigma members and/or past donors. $2,500.00 raised.
2002
- 2002 Sixth Scholarship Award Recipient: Senior nursing student Stelena Harrison Siniavsky. Focus: linkage between National Student Nursing Association at Seattle U and Nova Outreach Project – an evidenced – based / service – learning effort targeting a local alternative high school. Areas of address will be based on project assessments of students (e.g. smoking cessation programs).
- Sixth annual fund drive. Target group – active Alpha Sigma members plus past donors. $3,000.00 raised.
2003
- 2003 Seventh Scholarship Award Recipient: Junior nursing student Kelly Sehring. Focus: 1) establishment of stress management program linking physiology to self management in high-risk population of area high school students, 2) promotion of nursing as a career choice.
2004
- 2004 Eighth Scholarship Award Recipient: Deborah Brown, second year nursing student. Focus: homeless adolescents. Project: Development, production and distribution of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) pamphlet and educational video highlighting the risks of Hepatitis B. Award amount=$1,300.00
- Fall 2004, Elieen Ridgway Scholarship granted endowed status by Seattle University. The scholarship will exist in perpetuity honoring its namesake and recipients who work towards outreach leadership. While continuing to be sponsored by Alpha Sigma Chapter (Seattle University) of Sigma Theta Tau, the management and administration of the Ridgway Scholarship will now reside within the Seattle University Endowed Fund.
