The university first articulated strategic priorities in 2007.  In 2010, following substantial success in implementing those plans, it was time to revisit the strategic plan and bring it up to date with those successes and other changes in the university.

One of the first changes was to the fifth priority, originally Division One Athletics.  While athletics continues to be of strategic importance, the transition to Division One (the focus in 2007) is largely completed.  A new fifth strategic priority emerged, Investing in the Excellence of Our Faculty and Staff.

Secondly, action plans for each priority were approved by the Executive Team in August 2011.  These plans are modeled in part on the successful development of Academic Excellence into the Academic Strategic Action Plan. Each action plan contains three to five initiatives with clear objectives that collectively represent substantial progress for each strategic priority.  The initiatives are supported by action steps, schedules, timelines, resources, and success metrics. Senior administrators function as a point people for the priorities.  Moving forward, the point people will serve on an ongoing basis as advocates and implementers, working with the Executive Team to ensure that initiatives are properly resourced and the university makes progress in accomplishing its strategic goals.  The annual budget will be the primary mechanism for funding the strategic priority action plans, a connection supported by increased integration of planning and budgeting.  The Office of University Planning will support the point people, coordinate the overall process, and provide a channel for communication back to the campus.
