Research Interests:
Markuly’s research interests have centered on learning theory as it applies to religious and theological education, and the role of religion and spirituality in American culture. Dean Markuly has published on issues that reach across the religious/secular divide in society, such as the spiritual dimension of student athletics, the tensions existing between Christianity and business leadership in a capitalist-oriented economy, and the cultural dynamics of professionalism that impinge on the professionalization of lay ministry. His course text for Loyola University, entitled Faith and Culture, is a broad treatment of the dialogue between theology and the social sciences, particularly sociology, anthropology and economics. Dr. Markuly is currently working on a book that explores the relevance of insights from brain research to shaping of religious identity, values and attitudes.
His publishing interests have been, and remain, the creation of research-based materials that emphasize a sound contemporary presentation of the Catholic and Christian faith tradition, and challenge catechists and catechetical leaders to think from a stronger "evaluative" perspective about the goals and methodologies of their faith formation efforts. He is particularly interested in materials that reach across the religious/secular divide in American society and help to breakdown the compartmentalization of modern living.
He is also interested in the application of learning theory to distance education, as well as instructional strategies and evaluation of distance education.

Personal Information
Mark S. Markuly is Dean of the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. He earned a PhD in education from St. Louis University and an MA in systematic theology from Aquinas Institute of Theology. He also has a BA in journalism from the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Prior to joining Seattle University, Dean Markuly was associate professor of religion and education and director of the Loyola Institute for Ministry (LIM) of Loyola University New Orleans.
In addition to his teaching and administrative work, Dean Markuly has published pieces on issues that reach across the religious/secular divide in society, such as the spiritual dimension of student athletics, the tensions existing between Christianity and business leadership in a capitalist-oriented economy, and the cultural dynamics of professionalism that impinge on efforts to professionalize lay ministry.
