Public Sector Reform and Workers’ Rights in El Salvador

Salvadoran union leader Alex Rodriguez will speak at Seattle University about public-private partnerships in El Salvador and the difficulties Salvadoran workers confront in the face of privatization. He will also draw parallels to similar processes and problems in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
 
In El Salvador, labor unions currently struggle against a Public Private Partnership (PPP) law that threatens to give corporations more control through the privatization of public sectors such as higher education, sea and air ports, water and electricity. Salvadorans have a history of success in defeating privatization. In 2002, a nine-month strike fended off privatization of healthcare in El Salvador. But when privatization laws have won, the effects have been devastating. In 2001, privatization at the Acajutla port led to nearly 1,000 worker layoffs, dissolution of the labor union and a 90 percent cut in longshoremen’s daily wages. Cancer patients especially have suppressed immune systems. What they need is healthy blood- with the ability to reproduce more healthy blood cells. And with so many of our regular donors feeling under the weather, the willingness to donate is there but the ability to give what our patients truly need is not. Movies with Meaning: “Invisible War”

The currently Oscar-nominated documentary “Invisible War” is this quarter’s film in Campus Ministry’s Movies with Meaning Series. This powerful film, which has important implications for justice, explores the unacceptable reality of sexual assault within the U.S. Armed forces. The program will feature break-out discussion groups following the movie and ways to get involved. Co-sponsoring with Campus Ministry are Women and Gender Studies, Counseling and Psychological Services, School of Theology and Ministry, Diversity Citizenship & Social Justice, and Vet Corps and SU Veterans Club. Enjoy a free lunch and listen to Dan Hagedorn, senior curator and director of collections for the Museum of Flight. Hagedorn previously was research team leader and adjunct curator for Latin American Aviation at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. He served for 27 years in the United States Armed Forces and graduated from the University of New York, the United States Army Command and General Staff College as well as the Modern Archives Institute, National Archives. Hagedorn is also co-chair of the Programs Committee for the Smithsonian’s annual Mutual Concerns of Air and Space Museums conference. At SU, he will discuss how his vocational passion evolved.
