Personal Bio
Faustino Cruz, S.M., PhD was born and raised in Manila, the Philippines and migrated to the United States in 1982 to join the Society of Mary (Marists), the religious community of which the fourth bishop of Seattle, Bishop Gerald Shaughnessy, was a member. This year, he celebrates his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination.
For over 25 years, Professor Cruz ministered with migrants and refugees at parish, diocesan, and national levels as catechetical consultant, educator, community organizer, and pastor in the United States, Latin America, and the Philippines. In 2000, before completing a Ph.D. in Theology and Education at Boston College, he joined the faculty of the Franciscan School of Theology (FST) and the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, California. Prior to joining STM’s faculty, he taught in the area of Practical Theology and Education, while concurrently serving as Executive Vice President and Academic Dean of FST. He also served as convener of the Council of Deans of the GTU.
As an immigrant practical theologian, the daily struggle and survival of migrants and refugees have served as his primary theological locus, the core ingredient of his scholarship (creative work), and principal context of his service to church and society. Teaching and learning effectiveness in the field of theology and leadership demands a non-negotiable, constitutive element: rootedness in reflective practice (praxis). He has provided generative, strategic, fiduciary, and transformative leadership to various academic, pastoral, and community based initiatives.
