In the aftermath of the first Haiti earthquake, the Rev. Pat Robertson suggested on his television show, the 700 Club, that the massive destruction and loss of life was divine retribution for a pact Haitian slaves made with Satan in the late 18th century, in order to gain their freedom from the colonial rule of the French. Mark Markuly, dean of the School of Theology and Ministry, responds to the Rev. Robertson’s remarks, noting its historic inaccuracies and poorly thought out theology.
