The fifth annual Search for Meaning Book Festival, hosted by Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry is coming in just a few weeks: Saturday, March 9th, 2013, all day on the Seattle University Campus. It takes a large team to welcome more than 2000 guests to campus for the day, and we need your help! Please consider volunteering at this year's festival. Shifts are flexible throughout the day and we have some great volunteer positions and perks for all who participate! Understanding the System of Racial Inequity Workshop: Connecting the Head and Heart: Building the Case for Equity

Filmmaker and racial justice educator Shakti Butler of World Trust Educational Services will lead this one-day workshop designed to build skills for advancing and strengthening racial justice work. With her new film “Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity” as a catalyst for dialogue, Butler will lead participants in developing a deeper understanding of the system of inequity and exploring strategies to achieve personal, organizational and structural transformation. The workshop will foster community connection and is designed to enable new questions and approaches to racial justice work in the Pacific Northwest. This is a professional development and networking opportunity for human service professionals, educators, organizers, youth workers, students, social justice advocates and others looking to deepen their understanding of their role and work in advancing racial justice. Workshop fee is $139 and includes admission to the film on March 13 as well as lunch. To register, visit Cracking the Codes. Catholic Perspectives on Sports: Book Reading by Pat Kelly, S.J.

Have you ever considered how those in the Catholic faith have thought about sports and athletic competition over time? Pat Kelly, S.J., associate professor of theology and religious studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, has some insights to share on this topic, and this weekend will be reading from his new book, Catholic Perspectives on Sports: From Medieval to Modern Times. The book explores how playing sports can be related to human flourishing and openness to transcendence. Two of the chapters focus on Jesuit schools. You can hear him March 8, at 7 p.m. at Elliot Bay Bookstore, or on Saturday, March 9, at 2:15 p.m. in Pigott 304 as part of the Search for Meaning Book Festival. Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs, associate professor of Modern Languages and Women and Gender Studies, will read from her recently released book, Rebozos de Palabras: An Helena Viramontes Critical Reader. Two of her students are published in it, and students will also take part in the reading. From University of Arizona Press: “As Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs points out in her insightful introduction, not only has Viramontes’s work not yet received the broad critical engagement it richly deserves, but there remains a monumental gap in the interpretations of Chicana literature that reach mainstream audiences. Rebozos de Palabras addresses this void by focusing on how the Chicana image has evolved through Viramontes’s body of work. With a foreword by Sonia Saldívar-Hull, this collection addresses Viramontes entire oeuvre through newly produced articles by major literary critics and emerging scholars who engage Viramontes’s writing from multiple perspectives.” For more information, visit
