Facts & Fictions about Islam in Prison: Assessing Prisoner Radicalization in Post-9/11 America
Thursday, Jan. 31, 4-5:30 p.m.
Sullivan Hall, Room C5

The Access to Justice Institute, Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality and the student chapter of the National Lawyers Guild are pleased to invite you to hear Professor SpearIt discuss prisoner radicalization in the post-9/11 era. Using ethnographic data, he will show how Muslims have been characterized as a threat to national security, particularly, due to foreign jihadist connections. These assertions, however, are false alarms—neither extremist violence nor foreign infiltration has materialized in any meaningful way. The discussion will conclude by considering social and penal policies to keep the status quo for violent extremism and foreign infiltration, or, in other words, to keep this very small problem, small. For more information, visit ATJI or contact Patricia Sully at sullyp@seattleu.edu.

Meditation for Daily Living
Feb 1, 8, 15, 22 Noon-1:30 p.m.
Multifaith Prayer Room in Campion Hall

Have you ever considered meditation? The Office of Jesuit Mission & Identity invites faculty and staff to explore the practice of meditation (inspired by the Zen tradition) and how it can enhance your daily life. We will meet four Fridays at noon (Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22) for an hour. The sessions will be led by Eddie Daichi Salazar and Jason Tetsuzen Wirth and will be followed by a simple soup lunch from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Feel free to come with your curiosity, questions and “beginner’s mind.” All are welcome, and no experience with any kind of meditation is required, however, attendance at the first session on Feb. 1 is required. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Eddie Salazar (salazare@seattleu.edu or 296-6133).
