Soul Calling: A Photographic Journey through the Hmong Diaspora

Award-winning photographer, filmmaker and author Joel Pickford, will speak about his new book SoulCalling: A Photographic Journey through the Hmong Diaspora. In this first photographic book on the Hmong culture ever published, Pickford presents a literary pairing of creative nonfiction writing and documentary photography to explore cultures and communities of Hmong immigrants and Hmong Americans living in Fresno, Calif., as well as the way of life of Hmong villagers in Laos. His outside point of view offers a captivating perspective into the world of a vibrant but little known culture, and this portrait of a people who have remained resilient through war, persecution and adapting to new environments will inspire strength in all who view it. Booktalk by Kevin Kumashiro on Bad Teacher! How Blaming Teachers Distorts the Big Picture

Kevin Kumashiro is director of the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education and president-elect (2010-2012) of the National Association for Multicultural Education. He is a professor of Asian-American Studies and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Bad Teacher!... takes aim at the current debate on education reform, paying particular attention to the ways that scapegoating public-school teachers, teacher unions, and teacher education masks the real, systemic problems. It demonstrates how current trends, like market-based reforms and fast-track teacher certification programs are creating overwhelming obstacles to achieving an equitable education for all children. Bad Teacher! highlights the common ways that both the public and influential leaders think about the problems and solutions for public education, and suggests ways to help us see the bigger picture and reframe the debate. SAA New Orleans Rebuilding Trip

Interested in an alternative spring break? Come join Seattle U’s Shirts Across America on a rebuilding trip to New Orleans. Partnering with The St. Bernard Project, we work on houses that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Through one week of service, we aim to make a difference in communities in and around New Orleans that are still hurting seven years after the storm. Come join the Muslim Student Association, Campus Ministry, & The International Student Center for an Eid celebration and Dinner. Eid al-Adha marks the second Eid holiday of the year and it is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice. This festival commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son to God. This festival also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and is considered a holy time of year for the Muslim community.
Mormonism in the Election Spotlight

The 2012 election season has brought The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints into the center of the public eye. According to the 2012 Religious Congregations and Membership Study, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the fastest growing religious community in half of states in the U.S. Still, the church is a religious community unfamiliar to many, even as Mitt Romney's run for the presidency causes many people to turn to media and politics for information Mormon beliefs. In this presentation Joanna Brooks and Matthew Bowman will take up such questions as: (1) What is the prominent role of faith in the LDS community's sense of the public square? and (2) For the LDS community, how does faith shape engagement in the public square? Free tickets are required for this event, which is part of the School of Theology and Ministry’s Faith & Values in the Public Square Lecture series.
