Outreach

Local/Regional Engagement

Through the SU Center for Community Engagement students collaborate with Bailey Gatzert Elementary School and Washington Middle School by providing:

  • SUM Corps math tutors
  • Bannan Scholars Enrichment Program reading tutors
  • Science tutors

Inquiry in the Community: teaches community-based organizations how to infuse science into their youth activities. We train staff and volunteers at all levels of science experience to help kids be curious investigators, and we provide organizational support for building science capacity that fits your mission.

SciTechathon
The annual workshop introduces high school seniors to the world of physics at SU. Participants stay with an SU student, meet physics faculty and students, and complete experiments in well-equipped laboratories.

Global Humanitarian Partnerships

Engineers for a Sustainable World
The mission of ESW is to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students.

Professionals Without Borders
The program connects students interested in service work with skilled SU trades people (plumbers, electricians, engineers, etc.) to complete small, but substantial, projects for people in need. Projects include work in Jamaica, Zambia, Nicaragua and Belize.

KiloWatts for Humanity
Volunteers from this local nonprofit collaborate with SU students, faculty and staff of all disciplines to develop renewable energy micro-grid options and create sustainable business plans for less economically developed communities in countries such as Kenya and Zambia.
