Department of Mechanical Engineering
Office: ENGR 512, Phone: 206.296.6941 Dr. Stipe joined the department in the fall of 2004. He received his B.S. degree from Montana State University at Bozeman in 1998. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Professor Stipe’s research interests include renewable energy, combustion pollution, and nano/biotechnology. After graduating from MSU, he worked at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, conducting structural testing on wind turbine blades in Boulder, Colorado. For his Ph.D. research, he developed laser techniques to measure and generate nanoparticles at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Upon completing his Ph.D., he conducted research in neuron guidance at the University of Minnesota as a NIH Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with an interdisciplinary team from Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and Neuroscience. In 2005, Dr. Stipe received a $150,000 grant through the NSF Major
Research Instrumentation program to create a laboratory to study the
effects of nanoparticles on global climate change. Dr. Stipe collaborates
on research with the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). He has presented
his work both nationally and internationally and has several publications.
