Dr. Gehlen received the degree of Bachelor in Engineering Physics
from the University of Liege (1961) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science
from Northwestern University in 1966. Between 1966 and 1979 he was
a research scientist at the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus,
Ohio. His main research interests were in X-ray diffraction, dislocation
theory, fracture mechanics and computer simulation of atomic phenomena.
He published about fifty papers in these fields. Prof. Gehlen taught
and did research on interatomic potentials using neutron diffraction
data at the University of Leicester. In 1974 he spent nine months
at the NASA-Ames research center, researching hydrogen embitterment
of steels. Dr. Gehlen then taught in the Mechanical Engineering Department
at the University of Tulsa, OK from 1979 to 1982. At Seattle University
he teaches classes in materials science, dynamic systems and electric
circuits. In his spare time he studies relativity theory and applied
mathematics.
