(3rd Place Finish)

hpvc racing kevin2009 Human-Powered Vehicle Team Designed, built, and raced a utility class "transformable" human-powered vehicle named Optimus' (reads Optimus Prime) Hawkenheimer in the ASME HPVC West in Portland in May 2009. Led by juniors A. Beach and B. De Vitus (both '10).  The team finished 2nd place in utility design and 3rd place utility overall.  More about previous efforts in HPVC West, including our vehicle in 2008.

Change the World

Energy & Environment  Renewable energy, biofuels, and energy conservation technologies for power production, transportation, refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning. Alex Byrne '03 (Global Energy Concepts)

Medical Devices  Design of mechanical and electro-mechanical medical devices, such as artificial limbs and implants, surgical robots, artificial hearts and blood insulin testing equipment. Ethan Albright '02 (Mirabilis Medic)

Transportation  Design of automotive components used in both passenger and commercial vehicles, including hybrid engines, suspension, safety systems and fuel-saving measure. Nathan Heitzinger '07 (Kenworth Trucks)

Structures  Design and analysis of lightweight structures, including composites used in aerospace applications. Andrew Enke '06 (NextGen Aeronautics, Inc)

Robotics & Machineries  Design of mechanical systems or components ranging from autonomous robots, automated precision tooling, steering mechanisms, to bicycle derailleurs. Michael Linquist '08 (Electroimpact)

Research & Education  Innovative research and development efforts in industry, university, or government labs. Advancing the knowledge in the key emerging area of mechanical engineering. Dr. Garrett Clayton '02 (Villanova University)

2008-9 Sr. Design Projects

Algae-based Biodiesel Jet Fuel Development (Boeing)  Developing lipid extraction technology that removes fats from algae with least amount of energy input. The bio-fuel will be used in Boeing airplanes.

Energy Saving HVAC Design (Costco)  Energy efficient HVAC development for COSTCO big-box store. External parameters from the Southeastern US with high heat and humidity are used to develop a model system for all stores.

Multi-Motion Testing Machine (Boeing)  Develop a multiple-use 10,000 lb testing system for Boeing Test Laboratories. The tests including high load, high torque, large linear and angular displacement. Customized user-friendly computer software is also part of the project. (Joint with ECE)

Air Velocity Measurement System (Kenworth)
On-board air velocity sensor development. The information are then used to modify driver behavior to acheive maximum fuel economy.

Angst Warriors - Robotic Moving Art Installation
Design and build robotic "Angst Warriors" art installation where the movements of large-scale autonomous robots convey the sense of angst of modern society. (Joint with ECE)

Safe Water Supply Design for Chirundu, Zambia (EWB)
Design a safe drinking water supply for a village, away from the Zambezi river bank, in Chirundu, Zambia. Removal of water-borne bacteria from the water supply. (Joint with CEE)

Solar Photovoltaic System Design for Sunrise Lodge (Mount Rainier National Park)  Design an off-grid solar photovoltaic system with a propane generator backup for Sunrise Lodge that minimizes environmental impact.
