All about advising and registration

Greetings, first-year and transfer students!

Winter quarter will be on its way before you know it. This registration experience will be drastically different from your last one; from now on, you will register yourself for classes using the on-line system suonline.

Here are the steps for successful registration:

  1. You will receive a message in your SU e-mail account that lists information such as your registration time and any holds that are blocking your registration. The registration time represents the earliest time that you can register for classes, and the holds represent any obligations that will prevent you from registering. Be sure to clear your holds before your registration time! If you lose this e-mail message, the information is also available on suonline.
     
  2. If you do not know your password, it can be obtained by sending an e-mail to pinreset@seattleu.edu . Your message must include your SU user ID (your e-mail address without @seattleu.edu), legal name, birthdate, student number, program (major) and whether or not you receive financial aid.
     
  3. A few weeks prior to registration, you will receive an e-mail message from the General Science department and/or from your advisor announcing that it is time to sign up for an advising appointment. We generally post sign-up sheets outside our office doors. Check the department directory if you don't know where you advisor's office is. Please do not call or e-mail the department for an appointment.
     
  4. Advising holds are usually placed on pre-majors, first-year students, seniors, recent transfers, and students on academic probation. Other students are welcome, but not required, to meet with their advisor each quarter.
     
  5. Prior to your advising appointment, check out the schedule of classes available on suonline. Make a list of possible course choices (include plenty of alternate options). If you have no idea what classes you need to take next, check the program evaluation function on suonline. This tool also allows you to run What if? scenarios for different majors.
     
  6. So you have chosen some classes, talked with your advisor, and confirmed that all of your holds have been lifted. Specific instructions on how to register can be found on the Registrar's web site. Is it registration time yet? Although you are not required to register at your exact registration time, you should register as soon as you can after the system becomes available to you. Classes fill up, so you should use whatever priority you might have.
     
  7. What if the courses you want are closed?
  • Try alternate courses or class times.
  • Submit a closed class form.
    • For Science & Engineering courses, submit your completed form to the department offering the course.
    • For Business courses, see the instructor for approval then submit to the department offering the course.
    • For Arts & Sciences courses, submit to the department offering the course.
